A lot of things have changed since Rachel walked into Central Perk in a wet wedding dress more than 10 years ago. And not just things in the Village and the lives of comedy's most well-loved sextet, but in the lives of the people who grew up with them. People like me.
F.R.I.E.N.D.S. changed my life. It was the constant I counted on when I transitioned from teenager to adult, those University days when I was still trying to find my feet, my place in the world and figure out who I was, or at least who I wanted to be.
The end of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. marked the end of an era, not just for tv viewers, but for me too. The year after the series ended, my life changed dramatically - I became a mother, I quit my job and became a stay-at-home-Mom, and I lost my Mom to cancer.
But all that stuffs too heavy...this blog's about tv. And man, was there a major comedy drought on TV after 'they went for coffee' (and never came back!)...
But I'm here to say THANK GOD that drought is over...what am I talking about? I'm talking about How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM). I mean, don't get me wrong, there have been loads of tv series that have kept us captivated the last 5 years (and plenty of F.R.I.E..N.D.S. reruns on terrestrial and cable) but there hasn't been a half-hour comedy with the kind of punch and great writing and characters until now!
I have to say, I love every one of the characters! There's the protagonist Ted who is adorable. The crazy in love couple who know everything about each other Marshall and his Lily Pad. And there's Ted's love interest Robyn who's pretty dysfunctional too. And last but not least, the guy with the best lines (most of the time) - Neil Patrick Harris' Barney!
I love this show. Its hilarious and refreshing. And has started a coupla new buzzwords...can anyone say LE-GEN-DA-RY!
To be honest, i watch almost anything these days...
I've just moved back to Singapore and I'm loving my Hubstation. I've been in a TV drought ever since I had the kids because they dominate the TV (hey, cartoons keep 'em happier than CSI or Survivor) and when they slept, I wouldn't be able to hear the TV anyway cos I'd have to keep the volume down - so I was left with pirated DVD Box Sets (I was living in KL) of Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice and Gossip Girl. Plus, we were sleeping in the living room, so I had no place else to hide and watch tv even while they slept (don't ask why sleeping arrangements were such, suffice it to say it was my own lazy-ass fault hehe!)
But now, with Hubstation... I'm back to my TV addict days! I now put the kids to sleep at 9pm, nap with them for a coupla hours, and when hubby goes to bed, I take over the tv in the wee hours of the morning (to watch what I recorded during the day).
I have no idea how many tv hours I log a day but DAMN is'all good y'all!
Shows i'm watching and am prepared to debate/discuss....
American Idol 8
Survivor Tocantins
Amazing Race (season what now?!)
Gossip Girl Season 2
Heroes Season 3 (part2)
How I Met Your Mother
Don't Forget The Lyrics
Supernanny
Jon & Kate Plus 8 (Discovery Home & Health)
America's Next Top Model 11
Knight Rider (awesome pilot - still don't understand why Starworld didn't air it!)
Ghost Whisperer (Ch5)
Oscars (had to include this cos I thought this year's Academy Awards hosted by Hugh Jackman was really good...a nice departure from the usual drab proceedings)
Samantha Who? (pure chick flick type show...love Christina Applegate in this)
So post-F.R.I.E.N.D.S., there's still hope. Am looking forward to the next ep of Heroes this week as well as fresh eps of Knight Rider and the reality shows.
Next post - American Idol!

About Me
- summerr
- summerr is a nick that I've had since the IRC days in the 90s. I'm a freelance/part-time writer/blogger, full-time mommy/tv addict. Add me on twitter or join my facebook page (search for summerr-in-the-shower) and say hi! Ideas/comments all welcome :) Blogging's just my way of putting down the deluge of thoughts on paper so my kids can one day read it and go...ah so that's what mom was all about (confirmed nutcase, but we still love her!) xoxo, s.
